High Standards at a Low Cost of Living
Measuring 120 miles from east to west and 15 miles from north to south, Northern Cyprusis lightly populated with approximately 264,172 people living on 3355 sq. kilometers, according to the 2006 census. While TRNC comprises approximately one third of the island, it encompasses nearly half of the island’s spectacular coastline as well as some of the finest beaches in the Mediterranean.
Northern Cyprus prides itself on its excellent infrastructure and advanced telecommunications network, which enables direct dialing access to over 200 countries.
Northern Cyprus has a quality public and private bi-lingual educational system which includes six internationally recognized universities whose language of instruction is English. There are at least 14 museums of science, history, folk and art, and the region hosts exciting drama and music festivals.
There are several private and government health clinics, and nearby hospitals equipped with the latest technology offer excellent personalized healthcare that normally exceeds EU medical standards.
There is a strong ambiance of security and tranquillity as the crime rate is practically negligible at approximately 6% of the typical European rate.
Shared Turkish and English history provides the northern part of the island with an interesting blend of traditions and practices. While the population is predominantly Turkish Cypriot and the official language is Turkish, a large British and European community lives on the island and English is spoken everywhere, with French, German and Russian widely heard. As a legacy from British colonial days, cars continue to drive on the left, and the primarily secular population maintains Sunday as the day shops close for business with the exception of the 7-day supermarkets.
Cost of living is relatively low, from 1/3 to 2/3 lower than most parts of Europe and the United States, especially when living on local produce and household items. Wednesday is Open Market Day in Girne/Kyrenia, where everything from fresh vegetables to hand-made furniture is sold at bargain prices. In contrast, expensive delicacies and luxury imports at EU prices are readily available in modern supermarkets and shops. Although Cyprus is in the process of adapting to the Euro by 2008, Northern Cyprus is still using the Lira, which means prices may remain low for some time.
